Ooops, I misunderstood you again!

November 2, 2010

I love working with Denise, Bethany, and Ndlela on this project. We are four people who work well together, who are highly motivated to make the NPMR project a success, and who are all (in one way or another) professional communicators.

That is, we are professional communicators – who routinely slip up. We omit to include each other in the CC fields of crucial emails, we forget key decisions that were made the previous week, and we misunderstand each other fairly often.

In pointing this out, I don’t mean to imply we are bumblers. It’s that we recognize that collaboration is difficult and slips do occur. We’re pretty quick to call attention to our own mistakes and make corrections. When there’s a high level of trust, good will, and competence among the collaborators, it doesn’t have to be a blame game when miscommunications occur. The four of us are all on the same side, looking for ways to make it work, rather than looking for scapegoats.

And now, a word from the Department of Irony:

Less than 24 hours after posting the article shown above, I goofed, and missed a project team meeting. The other members of the team were so swamped with their respective tasks that they didn’t notice that the meeting hadn’t taken place until an hour after it was supposed to begin.
